Meal Prep for Teachers

A good intention, with a bad approach, often leads to a poor result.” – Thomas Edison

As teachers, we all want to eat healthier and have more time to do the things we love. But few of us know how to really make that a reality. As we hit back to school time and you prepare for the school weeks ahead, here are a few keys to meal prepping that will keep you happy, healthy and save you some time and money too.

1. Have a plan:

The same way that we create lesson plans to ensure we have successful classes, if we are going to stay healthy we need to plan our meals. The key to a successful meal plan is making it work for you. If you don’t like cooking, you probably want to have things that are quick and easy. Consider how much time you have to really prepare meals and plan accordingly. Also, keep in mind that having pantry staples on hand can go a long way.

2. Pick your day:

For most people, Sunday evenings are the best time to do their grocery shopping and meal prep. I personally like to shop one day and prep the next, that allows me time to clean, chop and prepare all my ingredients right when I get back from the store. Cook your meats while you’re chopping vegetables and store them in the right containers to make the most of your meals.

3. Don’t forget about snacks:

A common mistake is forgetting to include those 2 o’clock cravings. When you are facing a long day at school and you need a little afternoon pick me up, don’t run to the vending machine. When hunger strikes between lunch and dinner it’s important to be prepared with healthy snacks that fall in line with your nutrition goals. Don’t forget the fruits and veggies. You can freeze grapes, have sliced apples, or any seasonal fruit along with any fresh veggies of your choice.

4. Keep it interesting:

While having your go-to meals is important, don’t be afraid to be adventurous. Meal plans are nothing without a little innovation. Try switching up your salads at lunch for a sandwich or a wrap. Incorporate variety so you won’t get bored throughout the week. Need some inspiration? Here are 25 meals to get you started.

If meal planning and preparation seems overwhelming, remember that it gets easier the more you do it. Remember that this is to help you save time, stay motivated and healthy!
